Phoenix, AZ -- Last week the CASCOR Winter Late Model Series made their final stop of the season at the Phoenix International Raceway. Matt Riley was once again absent from the facility but still claimed the championship regardless. For many other drivers though, this would be a time to end the season on a high note, which means good, hard racing and the drivers of the CASCOR Winter Late Model Series didn't dissapoint.Charli Brown set the fastest time of the night to grab his 7th pole of the season with Mike Husby starting alongside on the front row. The two drivers would battle it out for the first thirty-six laps with Mike Husby taking over the lead on lap 22.
The caution flew for the first time of the night on lap 36 when Bertus De Jong got into Kyle Young off of turn four. All of the leaders would make their way down pit road under this caution for 4 tires and fuel. Charli Brown would take the lead back with a quick pit stop putting him ahead of Mike Husby once again.
Brown and Husby would lead the field back to the green flag with 7 laps to go. Brown would not get a very good restart as Tyler Tucker would look to make it three wide in turn 1 but it wouldn't pay off.
As Brown and Husby raced for position the next lap would get a little more action packed. Both Brown and Husby would get sideways in turns 1 and 2, but Brown would lose control, bringing the caution out for the second time of the night.
Charli Brown and Mike Husby would both make their way down pit road under this caution for fresh tires. As a result of the two leaders having problems, Brent Sweet would take over the lead.
Sweet and Tyler Tucker led the field back to green for a 1 lap shootout. Sweet would hang on to win his first Winter Late Model Series feature of the season and his first win of 2012. Tyler Tuck finished a very close 2nd, Mike Husby battled his way back to 3rd, Charli Brown also moved his way back up to 4th and Kyle Young rounded out the top 5. Wayne Osborne took home 6th and Bertus De Jong rounded out the finishing order in 7th.
The CASCOR Winter Late Model Series was very much a success in the 2011-2012 Winter season. We had very good car counts to start but it seemed like the interest dropped off a little as we entered the second half of the season. CASCOR would like to thank all drivers that participated in the Winter Late Model Series this year and look forward to having a great season in "The High Line" Truck series this year, that will take over the Tuesday time slot for the 2012a season.
Congratulations also goes out to all the winners and to our series champion Matt Riley. See you all at Daytona!
